Bužim, 20.9.2009
On September 19, 2009, during removal of tile and wooden construction from the roof of the Culture center in Bužim, cluster munition ‘bluebells’ was activated, causing injuries to three people.
Injured persons were removing tile and wood from the roof of the building, which was intended for demolition. Injured persons wanted to use the material to cover their family house.
Explosive device, known as ‘bluebells’ is explosive remnant of war and demining teams have cleaned this area on several occasions, but yesterday’s tragedy proved that UXO still exists there.
Bužim was under the missile ‘hurricane’ and ‘bluebells’ attacks during the war. One missile exploded above the center of the town and claimed life of several people, where many were severely and slightly wounded. Some meadows have been cleaned up from ‘bluebells’ since then, but buildings’ roofs still haven’t been surveyed and cleaned up, so they represent potential danger for local residents.
Few years ago ‘bluebells’ were found on the building opposite to Culture center, and one civilian was slightly injured in Buzim, when he found ‘bluebell’ on the garage and tried to remove it. [ Back ]
